Marilyn Monroe in The Misfits (1961)

Marilyn Monroe is absolutely luminous in this movie. The Misfits is a very strange film but entertaining and engaging. It is probably Clark Gable’s best role. (It was also both Marilyn Monroe's and Clark Gable's last film role.) I chose to recreate the most memorable ensemble from the movie, but certainly not the most practical.

I know, I know. I stated one of purposes of this blog was to prove that movie glamour was practical for everyday life and then I post a vampy dress with lurid cherries on it with a faux-fur shawl on the side. Well, you know sometimes even a practical girl has to go all-out and have fun!

So, anyhow, here is my interpretation:
Run Down:
Dress:, Retro Sun Dress – The Anna Dress in White Cherry Print by Pin Up Couture, $62
Shawl:, White Faux Mink Fur Shawl, $49.99
Shoes: Nine West, Ambitious in White, via Zappos, $68.95
Paddle:, Paddle Ball Game, $3.99
Total: $184.93

Amazingly, this dress is almost exactly the same. There are more cherries on this one and Marilyn’s dress doesn’t have the green leaves. But it is cut very similarly and has the ties over the shoulders. For a novelty dress, it is priced right.

Then I just had to try and find the fur wrap! I find it pretty ironic that one of the major themes of the films is cruelty to animals (which Marilyn is very much against) and then she carries a fur wrap to the rodeo! My version is a faux mink white wrap with a bow to tie it and I couldn’t believe the price – only $49.99.

Her shoes were simple rounded toe pumps in a neutral color. There were lots of vampy choices out there but I kept it simple and low-ish to the ground to tone down this already pretty out-there outfit.

Oh! And you’ll have to see the movie to find out why I included the paddle ball. If you have seen it, you’ll totally get it! Suffice it to say that Marilyn has pretty good hand-eye coordination and this dress makes an appearance with a paddleball. Enjoy!

I realize this outfit is probably too-much for most people. But, I think the cherries print is super-cute and could be pulled into any wardrobe in small doses for a little retro pop here and there. Here are a few other affordable and more practical ways to get a little of that fun Marilyn-cherries thing.
